On the list of things Mark Bittman has taught me to make, you can now add Baked Ziti.

Like the recipe states, this is basically a short-cut lasagna with less hassle. The most involved part of the recipe is getting all the ingredients ready to go. I made this on a weeknight and would do so again.

Recipe notes:

  • I used whole wheat penne instead of ziti because I couldn’t find whole wheat ziti.
  • The grocery store was out of bulk sausage. It definitely would have been easier, but regular sausage was just fine.
  • I do not consider garlic and parmesan cheese to be “optional” ingredients, so I included them both.

In short, make this recipe. As my husband said tonight, “It’s gotta be hard to mess up meat and cheese.”
