We wanted to try something a little different than the typical can of barbecue mixture and pound of ground beef for our barbecue sandwiches. I found this recipe in one of the many recipe files that I keep on my computer. The recipe calls for using a slow cooker and letting the meat cook for several hours but we simply made it in a skillet and let it simmer for about 45 minutes.

Let me just say the flavors were much more complex and intense. This was one of the best barbecue sandwiches I have ever had. The mustard and mustard seeds definitely made this something special.

Ground Beef Barbecue

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 celery ribs, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons prepared mustard
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seed
  • 1 cup ketchup

Directions

  1. Brown meat in slow cooker or skillet on top of range on medium heat. Remove excess grease.
  2. Transfer cooking pot to heating base or transfer meat to slow cooker.
  3. Add all remaining ingredients stirring well to blend.
  4. Cover and cook at low for 6 – 8 hours.
  5. Serve on buns or over hot dogs for chili dogs.
