We wanted to try something a little different than the typical can of barbecue mixture and pound of ground beef for our barbecue sandwiches. I found this recipe in one of the many recipe files that I keep on my computer. The recipe calls for using a slow cooker and letting the meat cook for several hours but we simply made it in a skillet and let it simmer for about 45 minutes.
Let me just say the flavors were much more complex and intense. This was one of the best barbecue sandwiches I have ever had. The mustard and mustard seeds definitely made this something special.

- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 celery ribs, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon cider vinegar
- 2 teaspoons prepared mustard
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard seed
- 1 cup ketchup
Directions
- Brown meat in slow cooker or skillet on top of range on medium heat. Remove excess grease.
- Transfer cooking pot to heating base or transfer meat to slow cooker.
- Add all remaining ingredients stirring well to blend.
- Cover and cook at low for 6 – 8 hours.
- Serve on buns or over hot dogs for chili dogs.
