For the last four years, I’ve been attending my friend Nikki’s cookie exchange. What’s a cookie exchange? Everybody brings one dozen cookies for each person in attendance and then gets to go home with a dozen cookies from each person. So, on Saturday, I’m bringing five dozen sugar cookies to exchange for five dozen different cookies that I didn’t have to make. Brilliant!

This recipe is courtesy of my grandmother’s late neighbor, Mrs. Guenther. (For the life of me, I can’t remember her first name. She was always just “Mrs. Guenther.”) You might not think sugar cookies are anything worth getting excited about, but these are. I promise. They’re not heavy and crisp, but they’re not light and soft either. They’re just perfect!

Mrs. Guenther’s Sugar Cookies
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 egg
- 2 cups flour
- ½ tsp. salt
- ½ tsp. cream of tartar
- ½ tsp. soda
- 2 tsp. vanilla
Cream sugar and shortening, then add egg and vanilla. Mix in rest of dry ingredients. Roll bits of dough into a ball, roll in sugar, flatten with bottom of glass that has been rubbed in butter and dipped in sugar. Bake in 350° oven for 12-15 minutes.
Note: I doubled the recipe and got 68 level tablespoon-sized cookies.
