What can I say? I have a thing for pulled pork. It is easy to make and always full of flavor. I found this recipe while looking for a way to use up a pork shoulder in the freezer. Basically it is a pork shoulder and a bottle of root beer slow cooked all day. What could be easier?

The pork is done when it falls apart. There shouldn’t really be much work at all after it has cooked for 6-7 hours. If you can slide a fork easily through the entire roast, it is probably done.

The pork was good enough to eat after shredding but I added some barbecue sauce just to give it a little kick. The recipe I found called for an entire bottle. In truth I used about a one-third of the bottle.

Ingredients

  • 1 (4-5 pound) pork shoulder
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle root beer
  • 1 (18 ounce) bottle your favorite barbecue sauce
  • 8 hamburger buns, split and lightly toasted

Directions

  1. Place the pork shoulder in a slow cooker; pour the root beer over the meat.
  2. Cover and cook on low until well cooked and the pork shreds easily, 6 to 7 hours. Note: the actual length of time may vary according to individual slow cooker.
  3. Drain well. Stir in barbecue sauce.
  4. Serve over hamburger buns.
